Light or dark? When each mode makes sens

fffddd

It's 9 pm, the office has been empty for hours, and the only thing illuminating the room is your monitor. The new campaign goes live first thing tomorrow morning, but there's still a mandatory field missing on the sign-up form. So, you quickly open the editor and … ouch. A blinding white screen in a pitch-black room.

Formcentric now makes this easy to avoid: you can choose whether the interface appears in light mode, dark mode, or follows your operating system settings. But which mode actually makes sense, and when? And is there any truth to the hype surrounding Dark Mode? We've taken a closer look.

When Dark Mode comes into its own

Dark Mode displays light text against a dark background. This brings clear advantages, especially when working in low-light environments.

  1. In the evening and in dark rooms: The contrast between your screen and your surroundings is reduced. Many people find this far more comfortable because the display no longer dazzles them.
  2. For light sensitivy: If bright light irritates your eyes, a dark interface can offer a much more comfortable viewing experience.
  3. For sharper focus: A dark interface feels visually understated. As a result, content like form fields, previews, and images naturally takes centre stage.
  4. Simply because you like it: Let's be honest—sometimes it's just a matter of taste. And when you enjoy using your tools, you usually work better with them.

Why Light Mode is here to stay

Dark text on a light background has been the standard for centuries, from printed books to crisp stationery. And for good reason.

  1. In daylight: In bright rooms or when sitting by a sunny window, a light interface is usually much easier to read. A dark screen, on the other hand, can quickly look washed out in those conditions.
  2. For reading and writing text: If you spend a lot of time writing text such as confirmation messages or email templates, dark text on a light background is often easier on the eyes over long periods.
  3. For less-than-perfect vision: Some people find light text on a dark background looks slightly blurry or suffers from a "halo" effect. If that sounds familiar, Light Mode will likely feel much better for you.
  4. Closer to the final result: Most websites where your forms will eventually be embedded use a light background. Working in Light Mode means you're editing in an environment very close to what your users will actually see.

Fact Check: What’s the Real Deal with Dark Mode?

There are plenty of myths floating around about Dark Mode. Not all of them hold up under scrutiny.

"Dark Mode reduces eye strain." Partly true. In a dark environment, a dark screen causes less glare, which many find more comfortable. However, there is no conclusive scientific evidence that Dark Mode prevents eye fatigue. The best remedies for tired eyes remain taking regular breaks, adjusting your screen brightness, and keeping a healthy distance from your monitor.

"Dark Mode saves battery life." It depends on your device. On OLED displays, dark content can lower power consumption because dark pixels produce less light (or turn off entirely). On LCD screens, the effect is negligible because the backlight stays on regardless of what's displayed.

"Dark Mode protects against blue light and helps you sleep." Not automatically. Even in Dark Mode, your screen still emits light. If you want to reduce blue light in the evening, you're better off using your operating system's Night Shift or Night Light feature, which warms up the display colours.

"Dark is more modern and professional." A matter of personal preference. Neither mode is inherently superior. All that matters is which one you feel most comfortable working in.

The Easy Solution: Just Follow Your System

Can't decide? You don't have to. By selecting the System option, Formcentric automatically adapts to whatever appearance settings you've chosen for your operating system or browser. Many operating systems let you schedule automatic switching between light and dark themes. Formcentric simply follows suit: light during the day, dark in the evening, without you having to lift a finger. It's particularly handy if you switch between multiple devices or work at different times of day.

The Verdict: Entirely Up to You

Whether you choose Light, Dark, or System, the setting applies only to your own account—your colleagues will continue working in their preferred mode. And don't worry: your published forms will look exactly the same to your users as before. You still control their design through your custom themes.
